About The LonWorks® Internet Demo
This demo provides a glimpse of LonWorks Technology's capabilities for extending the reach of the Internet beyond computers to also include devices that are part of a control network, like switches, dimmers, outlets, thermostats, etc. There is now a standard, interoperable, and easy-to-use way of seamlessly connecting people to devices.
The convergence of data and control networks is happening right now. See the related links section below for the latest industry alliances, presentations, and products releases related to connecting people and devices together.
The demo itself resides in Echelon's corporate demo room in San Jose, California. This is a LIVE DEMO. So in addition to other Internet users who may be trying out the demo at the same time as you are (see below), you may occasionally see people walking through the room.
How to use this demo
Simply move the cursor over the image in the main page.
As the cursor moves over a product, a description appears below the image.
When you click on a LonWorks based device, the image is updated and the control panel for that device appears at the right of the page.
This provides the current status of the device and allows you to change the status.
Product information (i.e. manufacturer, model) for the device is also provided.
You can then check the current status of the device (e.g. light ON) and optionally change its state.
The image will update automatically when you click anywhere on the image, and also when a device's status is changed via the control panel.
With no user activity, the image updates automatically every 60 seconds.
You can upload a new image at any time by using the Reload Image button on the top navigation bar. |

Usage conflict
Due to the interactive nature of this demo, and the fact that it is available via the web, it is likely that more than one user may be using the demo at any given time. Multiple users can monitor the status of devices and get live image feedback of the demo room at any time. However, when multiple users attempt to change the status of the same device at the same time, the behavior of the device may not correspond to the action performed by the user. For example, if user A attempts to turn a light ON while user B turns the light ON and then OFF while, user A may never see the requested action (light turning ON) take place. This is generally not a problem in the real world scenarios.
How it works
The LonWorks Network
The logical bindings between the different products were chosen to obtain the most intuitive and "demo-friendly" configuration.
Note that the logical binding of a LonWorks network can be changed very easily at any time to adapt to changes in user
requirements and product additions. The following is the logical binding between the LonWorks based products for this demo.
Product Bindings
Left wall dimmer controls the table lamp.
Right wall switch control the wall light.
Motion sensor controls the picture light.
Architecture
The demo is made up of several parts: the LonWorks control network, i.LON 1000 Internet Server and the various tools and
technologies to make such a demo work. The i.LON 1000's internal web server actually serves the web pages that you see in
this demo (including the one you're reading right now). In addition, i.LON 1000 allows its web pages to tap into the various
control point in the LonWorks network (e.g. lamp state, occupancy, temperature) and report the information back to the users
viewing them on their remote clients (i.e. web browsers, WAP phones, etc.).
